The Asia-Pacific region is witnessing a steady increase in the demand for corn, particularly in countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. As a staple in animal feed due to its high protein content and digestibility, countries in the Asia-Pacific are looking to India to fulfil their growing demand. India is emerging as a powerhouse for this nutrient-rich and cost-effective commodity.

Recently, Torq Commodities undertook a significant corn shipment from Malkapur in Maharashtra to Vietnam. Known for its fertile fields, the city plays a vital role in supplying high-quality corn to the rest of the world.

Here’s how it went.

Upon our arrival at the Malkapur warehouse, our team partnered with Cotecna Inspection, a renowned quality inspection agency, to inspect and rigorously test the corn to ensure that it met the relevant quality criteria. After confirming that the corn met the quality criteria, bags of corn were loaded onto trucks bound for Malkapur Railway Station.

After arriving at the station, comprehensive quality checks were conducted on samples to ensure adherence to the relevant quality standards. The wagons were thoroughly cleaned and lined with polyethylene sheets to prevent contamination. Once the checks were complete, the bags of corn were loaded onto the rakes.

Once the loading process was complete, the rakes embarked on their journey to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Mumbai.

At JNPT, the corn bags were carefully loaded into containers to minimize spillage and preserve the quality. The containers were covered with craft paper to provide additional protection. The loading path was also covered to collect any spillage and reduce weight loss.

Furthermore, the containers were sealed with plastic sheets to prevent moisture ingress caused by weather changes during the sea journey to Vietnam. Although it incurred additional costs, this measure was necessary to maintain the integrity of the commodity.

Before the voyage, the containers were meticulously fumigated to prevent any infestations during the journey.

Finally, the shipment successfully reached Vietnam without compromising the quality of the consigned corn and within a record time frame!

By creating seamless supply chains, we continue to play our role in connecting the global corn market with the fields of Malkapur, Maharashtra. Backed by our global network and on-ground expertise, Torq Commodities is poised to simplify and strengthen global trade by delivering responsibly sourced commodities worldwide sponsored.

$10.5 billion by 2031: The rising value of the global Cashew market

Cashew nuts are continuing to increase in popularity across the globe. From raw cashew production in Africa to busy exportation in Asia, market stakeholders are determined to meet the demand. After all, the worldwide cashew market reached a value of $7 billion last year. According to predictions, this figure will grow to $10.5 billion by 2031 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.6%.

Social shifts

Rising reports of lactose intolerance, healthier dietary choices, and veganism drive the uptick in cashew consumption. Nuts contain nutrients, including heart-healthy fats, that improve heart health and general well-being. Additionally, they consist of nearly the same amount of protein as meat when comparing similar quantities.

Cashews contain significant amounts of copper, which is necessary for energy production, brain development, and a robust immune system. They are also a fantastic source of magnesium and manganese, both essential for maintaining a healthy bone structure.

The cashew market is classified into whole kernels, desert kernels, pieces, and scorched kernels. The Whole White kernels sector represents the largest market segment. However, the increased demand for cashew-based processed foods has massive potential.

Cashew milk, butter, and other spread alternatives are becoming increasingly popular in North America and Europe. The nut appeal has some science to it. Notably, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that individuals who consume nuts more than four times per week have a 37% lower chance of contracting coronary heart disease.

Consumer changes

North America holds the largest cashew market share and is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 3.2% between 2022 and 2031. Consumption in the United States is primarily dominated by California, Florida, New York, Texas, and New Jersey. The nut’s utilization in snack foods has been instrumental in driving these products to account for nearly 60% of the commodity’s demand.

Both raw and roasted cashews are used to make cashew butter, a natural alternative to peanut butter, which is a common allergen. As a result, the sales of these processed products are expected to continue rising throughout this decade.

Following North America, Asia-Pacific ranks at the top of the market leader list. The region’s market is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 3.3%. Vietnam, China, and India lead the zone in imports. Interestingly, young consumers aged between 19 and 35 are driving the increased consumption of cashew products.

Taking #China as an example, roasted nuts and seeds, such as cashews and almonds, are among the most popular snacks. The sales of roasted nuts and seeds are driven by their taste, nutritional value, and health benefits. These factors will continue to contribute to the rise in cashew consumption. #Europe holds the third-largest market share. Within the continent, #Germany is the most significant consumer.

Straits Research explains:

“The demand for cashews as a snack in Germany is seasonal, with a peak in the winter and a decline in the summer. There has been a rise in the use of cashews in the food and beverage business serving consumers. Recent industrial interest in cashew nuts has led to their use in biscuits, cereals, ice cream toppings, and the production of cashew nut butter. Because of the rising popularity of healthy snacking, cashew consumption has surged.”

Altogether, the consumption of cashew nuts throughout Europe is increasing by 5% annually. In 2020, Germany alone imposed €430 million worth, which accounts for 32% of all EU imports. Additionally, the market is growing at a rate of 7.8% each year, reaching a landmark of 65,000 tonnes in 2020. Contributing to global trade, around 30% of all imported cashew nuts from Germany are re-exported to other European markets.

Production potential

For Europe, Indonesia serves as a growing supplier from Asia. However, Africa has the most potential. Countries like Burkina Faso, Benin Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Kenya are seizing opportunities in the cashew market.

Cashews are best suited to growing in tropical climates, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where approximately 90% of the world’s traded raw cashew nuts are cultivated.

Thus, African governments have been trying to revive institutional infrastructure to cater to demand. Many African cashew boards and councils are overhauling their approach and collaborating with other countries to obtain access to processing technologies. For example, the African Cashew Initiative was founded in 2009 to optimize production, processing, and supply chain links.

The cashew production ramp-up initiative is a global one. In practice, the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) and the International Nut and Dried Fruit Foundation (INC) of Spain have joined forces with others worldwide to sign a deal forming an international cashew task force to advance the commodity’s production.

Straits Research shares:

“They have proposed that the government subsidize this initiative to benefit cashew growers and enhance cashew nut production. As a result of the increased demand for cashew-based processed foods and the substantial government support for cashew growers, cashew production has expanded. These variables are projected to stimulate market expansion in the coming years.”

Across continents, global producers, exporters, and suppliers will be keen on meeting demand into the 2030s. Stakeholders across the international spectrum will have to ensure they have the proper systems in place to stay on top of the growth over the next decade Website.

Who Are the World’s Largest Producers of Dried Chillies?

Global tastes are becoming spicier. Markets across the continents are increasing their demand for chillies. With this trend, around four million tonnes of dried chillies and peppers are being produced each year.

Worldwide demand

While Asia has long been a chilli-consuming stronghold, there is a potential significant demand worldwide. For instance, Europe is the world’s second-largest importer of dried chillies, making up approximately 40% share of total imports.

The clear leader

India tops the list with 1,702,000 tonnes of dried chilli and peppers produced in 2020. However, last year saw the price of the nation’s chillies rise amid heavy rain and high domestic demand. Prices increased by 50% in September 2022.

The prices remain high into 2023, with Kashmiri red chillies costing more than almonds per kilogram. India’s farmers will be keen to address shortage challenges into the summer.

Nonetheless, India will remain a production powerhouse. As Statista puts it:

“India is by far the world’s biggest producer of dried chilis and peppers, the Food and Agriculture Organization category which comes closest to describing varieties of hot peppers that are often dried

and sold whole or as a powder. In 2020, the latest year available, India produced more than 1.7 million tonnes of dried chilli and pepper varieties – far ahead of second-placed Thailand and third-placed China. The latter country is a big importer of Indian hot chilis, which it uses to fill its high domestic demand.”

South Asia dominates across the board. Bangladesh ranked fifth in 2020, producing approximately 158,000 tonnes. Pakistan followed with 142,000 tonnes. Pakistan has also been dealing with shortage difficulties amid heatwaves and floods.

Thailand and Myanmar round off the other Asian countries on the list. Meanwhile, Ethiopia and Cote d’Ivoire represent Africa.

Diving deeper

It’s clear to see that India has a grip on the dried chilli and pepper market. However, the country’s presence in the spice trade is well spread. It has an 80% share of the global turmeric production. It is also second to #China when it comes to garlic production.

Overall, India is the leader in spice growing in the world, holding a share of around 36% in global chilli production. Andhra Pradesh is the state that contributes the most to this figure, with a 57% share in total production.

Chillies represented over 130 billion Indian rupees in the Indian economy during the fiscal year of 2020. This figure was lower than the previous year’s contribution of chillies from the country. However, the onset of the pandemic may have contributed to this shift.

Subsequently, estimates for 2022 are promising. It’s estimated that Andhra Pradesh produced 700,000 MT (metric tonnes) of chilli last year. Telangana follows in second with 433,000 MT. Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka are also taking a large share, accounting for 303,000 MT and 184,000 MT of the estimates, respectively.

Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Nagaland are all estimated to have contributed a portion each to India’s overall production.

Looking ahead

The demand for chillies will continue into the second half of 2023, with the likes of the United States, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore heavily importing the commodity. China itself is even a major importer despite being a strong producer.

Torq Commodities exports the world’s spiciest Teja chillies from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh to China. Despite the numerous challenges that the chilli market in India is currently facing, we work tirelessly to provide our clients with the finest quality chillies, which involves a rigorous on-ground quality inspection.

Europe will be the key international player taking on India’s spices in this next chapter. Notably, The United Kingdom is the leading European importer of Indian chillies.

UK imports grew by 7.5% in value each year between 2017 and 2021, totalling around 16 thousand tonnes.

The Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI) shares:

“The United Kingdom’s imports are influenced significantly by Indian supplies. This is mainly due to the country’s large Indian community, as dried chillies are often used in traditional Indian recipes. Indian is among the most common non-UK nationalities in the UK at 795,000 inhabitants in 2022, and it continues to expand as India is also the most common non-UK country of birth for UK citizens.”

In practice, The UK imports 32% of its dried chillies from India, second to Spain, which had 35% of total imports. Another primary supplier to the UK is China, with a 9.5% share in imports.

Even though Spain imports plenty of dried chillies to the UK, it is Europe’s main importer of the commodity, taking on nearly 75,000 tonnes in 2021. Germany is in second place with 25,000 tonnes imported in 2021. The Netherlands, Poland, and France are also key importers.
