Read MoreEducation is not just a privilege; it’s a fundamental right that every child should have access to. However, this right remains elusive for many children, especially those who are visually challenged. The Sisabelo Saka Inclusive School (SSIS) in Lusaka, Zambia is changing this narrative, making quality education a reality for visually impaired children through theirdetermined efforts.
Founded in 2019 by Ms. Mulambwa Gondwe, SSIS has become a beacon of hope, breaking down barriers that hindered visually impaired children from accessing the education they deserved. The school’s vision is to provide a safe and inclusive environment where every child can flourish. Under Ms. Gondwe’s visionary leadership, SSIS fosters academic growth, creativity, and a love for learning.
Recognizing the urgent need to support this cause, TORQ Commodities stepped in as a donor, aligning their commitment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals for education. Recently, the school organized a unique fundraising event, “Dinner in the Dark,” where diners experienced a blindfolded meal, raising awareness about visual impairment and challenging perceptions.
Despite its progress, SSIS still faces challenges like operating from rented accommodation. The school aims to secure a permanent site to meet the increasing demand for inclusive education. Children with visual impairments often struggle due to limited access to schools and discriminatory practices. SSIS aims to change this by providing tailored support and equal opportunities.
Sisabelo Saka Inclusive School is not just a place of education; it’s a testament to the power of determination, inclusivity, and partnerships. Through its small yet impactful steps, SSIS is paving the way for a brighter future for visually impaired children, proving that education truly has the potential to transform lives.
